Sandalwood is a wood-derived fragrance used for perfumes and incense. The highest quality of oil is harvested from trees that are 40 years of age and older. The entire tree is used for making the oil, even the stump and roots of the tree. The highest grade of Sandalwood comes from government owned trees in India. Even though the trees are under strict control for harvesting, the trees have become victim to illegal harvesting and exporting which has driven the price up over the past five years. Sandalwood trees are also found in Sri Lanka, Hawaii, South Pacific Islands and Australia. The oils from different locations are not as high in quality as those from Southern India.
