Although incense was originally traded from India to Japan, the Japanese art of making incense is unsurpassed today. The art of making Japanese Incense becomes a life's work as tens of thousands of hours of study and practice are necessary to be able to create the incenses that have traditionally been burned in the temples. It is rare for new ingredients to be added to these time tested Japanese Incense formulas.

Chinese Incense is widely used in religious rituals and was used for medicinal purposes from early times. It is believed that China created and perfected the incense stick. Although incense was originally imported from India, these were powders and resins and needed an outside source of heat for burning. Today, we can thank the Chinese each time we light a simple stick for our pleasure.

One of the oldest references to incense can be found in the Indian Vedas with reference to Ayurveda. Indian Incense was used for all ceremonies in Hindu temples from 5,000 B.C. to the present. It is the Indian way of life, to offer incense, along with candles and flowers at their personal altars, both morning and night, as part of their daily devotion. Frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood and camphor were among the India Incense offered across the continents in trade with their spices and traditions.
